14 Sep 09 Chemotherapy (Taxotere) for prostate cancer/bone pain

Hi Frank, just spotted your post. I can understand your concern but it all depends upon the alternatives & how you feel about it. I am 64 & was diagnosed with APC in May no real symptoms but PSA 19.6, Gleason 9 & scans confirmed situation. I am on Casodex daily, Zoladex 3 monthly & was given opportunity to take part in a clincial trial STAMPEDE involving Taxotere & Prednisolone. On a nothing to lose basis I went for it. Chemo is invasive & can be unpleasant. After my first infusion I ended up with neutropenia in hospital. I felt really ill & had stabbing pains in arms & legs - no sickness but terrible diarrhoea. If you go for it make sure you get Domperidone anti-nausea medication. The hospitalisation was a concern but I soon recovered & I would go through it again if necessary. My second dose was last Friday & in a slightly reduced amount because of previous reaction. This time I have had hardly any reaction & actually feel pretty good. OK so the taste buds will definitely go, my hair (what is left of it!) is falling out & the steroids have given me a Mike Tyson like neck. The important thing is that with the chemotherapy I feel it gives me another chance on top of the hormone therapy. Too early yet to say what the results will be. I am prepared to grab whatever opportunity I can to prolong my active life. My advice is that if it is offered - take it. There is a great oncologist at your hospital called Dr S - she is a treasure & my life is in her hands. Good luck & let me know how you go on.
