Yes - children of that age are very perceptive and must know something is wrong. When my mother died (back in 1981) my eldest was nearly 7 then a 5 yr old then a 2 yr old. Last one remembers nothing but Mum said to me “Am I dying”. I screwed up my face (she died at home and I looked after her and had my children with me). I told the children she was going to die but they must not worry about it. Her last night I lifted up the little children and they kissed her. She died in the night. When my kids woke up I said “Nanna has died”. The 5 yr old wanted to see her body but I could hardly bear to look at it myself so I said NO but on reflection I wish I had let him see it. The 5 year old drew pictures of coffins and so on. They just took it in their stride but it was never mentioned by any of them to my Mum that she was dying. So maybe if you tell your son directly that he must not mention this to your father-in-law then he won’t. I was reflecting on this and so I told you the story and hope it helps.
